Two Southwick companies were presented with prizes at the glittering Brighton & Hove Arts Council Drama Awards Evening held this week.
The adjudicator was Sian Webber, who has acted extensively on stage and TV for over 20 years, and is appearing now as Ritchie Scott the lawyer in East Enders.
Wick Theatre Compny and the Southwick Players were up against Lewes Theatre Club, Burgess Hill Theatre Club and New Venture Theatre Club, with the performances being judged from September to November.
For their October production of Visiting Mr. Green, Southwick Players landed the prestigious Arthur Churchill Award for Excellence.
The publicity team were again judged the best for its promotion of the play, and both cast members Ron Common and Ross Gardiner were both nominated for the title of Best Actor.
Meanwhile, the company was as runner-up for the Bea Waters Challenge Cup for best overall production. The Players were nominated in several other categories, including Best Stage Set, Best Stage Crew and Best Director.
Wick Theatre Company’s September production of Calendar Girls also merited some awards. Sheelagh Baker won the title of Best Supporting Actress for her performance as Jessie, while Maggie Pierce and Cherry Briggs carried off the prize for Best Costumes.
Katie Brownings [playing Chris] was runner-up for the Best Actress Award, while the Company was nominated for Best Stage Crew, Best Sound Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Technical Achievement.
Overall winner was Brighton’s New Venture Theatre for its production of The Price by Arthur Miller.
Sally Diver, publicity team co-ordinator for Southwick Players, said she was proud ofher team.
“This is the third consecutive year we have won the award for best publicity, which is something that has not been achieved by any other company,” she said. “When the Southwick Playrs name was called out I don’t mind admitting I gave a little shriek of joy and didn’t stop smiling all evening.”
Visiting Mr Green director H Reeves said for both actors in the two-hander to be nominated for best actor was such an achievement and a testament to their great performance. I couldn’t have been more excited for them,” he added.
