Programme Note #1: Love from Judy
SW wrote: “Recently, a whole new generation of readers has discovered the simple charm of Jean Webster’s book Daddy Long-Legs on its appearance in paperback. First published in 1912, it tells the story of Jerusha Abbott – Judy to her friends – who has grown up in an orphanage and whose future looks bleak. An unknown benefactor is about to change all that and the story takes on an almost Cinderella-like quality.
We delight with Judy in her new-found friendships and the fun of college life. Her infectious zest for living spills over in the letters she has to write on the first day of every month to her Guardian. His true identity is a secret but she gives him his nick-name when she catches a glimpse of his elongated shadow. Despite the fact that she is never to expect a reply, she confides her innermost thoughts to her mysterious Daddy Long-Legs always signing herself affectionately – ‘Love from Judy’.
In the cast of the original London production at the Saville Theatre were such names as Jean Carson, June Whitfield, Johnny Brandon, Bill O’Connor and Adelaide Hall. When I first saw this play, I fell completely under its spell and for a long time I have always hoped to make it more widely known to Barn Theatre audiences.
I should like to thank the cast, the company and the splendid back-up team of the Wick Theatre Company for making this possible.”
