In the evening, the second part of the festival, for group entries, was held in the Barn Hall. This consisted of four one-act plays by local societies, a dancing display, and a choral recital, which were adjudicated by Mrs J Cordery and Mr W. G. Stone, M.A., Director of Education for Brighton.

The Southwick Players presented The Happy Journey, by Thornton Wilder, and those taking part were George Baker, Doreen Kingsnorth, Michael Hall, Jane Atkinson, Edmund Andrew and Muriel Press. The producer was Patricia Hill.

For the Southwick Townswomen’s Guild, Joan Brampton produced a play written by herself, entitled Apologies to William. The cast comprised Dorothy Stevens, Bea Emerson, Sidney Mitchell, Helen Suter, Kitty Moore and Peter Elder.

The Young Wick Players chose Elizabeth Penney’s …And the Shouting Dies for their entry and the following took part: Betty Gedge, Mary Gedge, Betty Carpenter, Ross Workman, Ralph Dawes, Ian Elliott, Elaine Smithers and John Wilson. The producer was John Wilson.

The fourth play was presented by the Kingston and District Women’s Institute Drama Group, and was entitled Just Before Ten, by Howard Agg. The producer was Peggy Corte and those taking part were May Gedge, Dorothy Twine, Lilian Wass, Ivy Osborne, Jessie Haviland, Mary McNabb, and Freda Hewlett.

The Awards

The Group Cup was won by the Kingston and District Women’s Institute Drama Group, who earned high praise from the adjudicator.

After the group performances, prizes were presented by Coun. E. E. Thornton, J.P., Chairman of Southwick Urban Council, who is president of the Community Association.
