Southwick’s Barn is a traditional Sussex building at the heart of an old homestead which now forms the Southwick Community Centre. The present Barn goes back at least 200 years, although some of the stones were ‘borrowed’ from the ruins of a Roman villa just a few hundred yards away.
The Barn was converted into a community hall and theatre in 1951 following a huge effort from local volunteers. In 1998 it was extensively improved and extended at a cost of almost £1 million. Money was raised through local and national sponsorship, including the National Lottery.
The Barn has been home to the Wick since the company’s inception, and it now enjoys the use of a much enlarged stage and state-of-the-art technology. The early days of this development were conceived back in 1969 when Wick on the point of losing their scenery store to a road widening scheme.
