Brian K Cooper – tribute

In Memory of

Brian K. Cooper ‘Bernie’

1914 – 04 . 01 . 2011

Wick News carried Ray Hopper’s authored piece in March 2011

We have heard that Brian (Bernie) Cooper (Coops to us) had died in Thailand. I hadn’t realised quite what a celebrity he was until finding the following piece on the internet :-

“An Evening for Bernie Cooper” has been organised by friends, colleagues, and members of Bangkok’s hospitality industry as a tribute to the writer who died in January after a short illness. A colourful character and a dedicated journalist, Bernie was greatly admired for his culinary knowledge, insight, and eloquent writing style. His widely published articles made a major contribution to Bangkok’s dining and entertainment scene for many years.”

A celebration of Bernie’s life and his passion for food, wine and music, the unforgettable evening at Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit will include a dinner of refined cuisine complimented by exceptional wines, and red hot jazz by leading international musicians.

We have recently discovered that “Coops” was a successful film and TV scriptwriter, with a number of credits including an episode of “Auf Wiedersehn Pet” and the films “Bicyclette de Belsize” and “The Great Riviera Bank Robbery”.

Diners will enjoy a special menu created by gifted chefs from Bangkok’s leading restaurants including Chef Norbert A Kostner of Mandarin Oriental, Chef Gaetano Palumbo of Royal Orchid Sheraton, Chef Martin Faist and Chef Thibault Chiumenti of Plaza Athénée Bangkok, A Royal Méridien Hotel, Chef Gianni Favro of Gianni Ristorante, and Chef Michael Gremer and Chef Stefano Merlo from Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Bangkok.

There’ll also be outstanding live jazz from Cynthia Utterbach and the Bamboo Bar Band from the Mandarin Oriental, Alice Day and Steve Cannon with the Randy Cannon Power Trio and Koh Mr. Saxman with the Jeremy Monteiro International Trio from Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit.

Once asked why he enjoyed writing about food, wine, and jazz so much, Bernie responded, “It’s all about raising our glasses to everything we love.”

Join us for a memorable evening as we raise our glasses to Bernie Cooper. Proceeds support the education of Bernie’s son, Jack.
